Mountain Movers

Six piece band from New Haven, Ct.

Go in the shed. It is a small octagon in the backyard. There is a table with a four track, Guild guitars, a kick drum turned on its side with a tambourine and a tom off the rack. Next to a stack of cassettes is a triangle, a Sleep-Mate X wind machine, a transistor radio, and a shaker covered in Duct tape. A Fender Deluxe has a 58 hanging in front while a 57 sits in a clamp on a stand. Bits of many colored pastels are jumbled together in a blue tackle-box. The wooden chair from the 40's creaks like an old door when it swivels. There are baseball cards, black and white photographs, black ink drawings, and toy soldiers. There is a typewriter and paper with typed letters piling up. You can spit on the floor. You can spill your drink. Only the broken Virgin Marys seem to notice. The window opens to a quiet garden of wild flowers. It is blazing hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winters. When you emerge hours later, you will have a stack of new songs swirling with the day and, hopefully, a bad case of shed head. You have entered the world of The Mountain Movers.

One day, not so recently, they emerged with 24 love songs with broken images of the devil, death, and the afterworld. For their debut, We’ve Walked in Hell and There is Life After Death, they whittled it down to 12 tracks of narcotic rock. There are moments of hope and celebration, but ultimately the devil, who here stands for everything from distraction to excess, always wins.

The songs are written and sung by Daniel Greene of the critically acclaimed band The Butterflies of Love. He is an elementary school teacher of all subjects, a Divinity School graduate, and an author and illustrator of books of poems, strange children’s stories, and one act plays.

Live, the boys stumble through a dynamic set of songs with laid-back abandon. Rick Omonte (bass), Rob Katz (piano), John Panos (trumpet), Eric Elligers (saxophone), and Jay Bates (drums) lead the band through a gripping set of songs. Dan sings with soul and gusto. Like listening to the oldies station, the songs are classic in structure and moving in spirit. The stage becomes a small space, where those songs built up in the shed can be let loose on the public. This record represents a beginning for the band. They have a long list of songs waiting to be arranged and recorded. The songs go from the head to the shed to the studio to your home. They look forward to a future filled with recording sessions, free drinks, and gigs at a venue near you.

MAY DAY! MAY DAY!

It's been a while since I posted one of these suckers, so let's catch up:

1. Quiet Life is back from their month long US tour. Good times were had all over the country. The boys from Quiet Life spent 5 days at SXSW, playing daytime shows, handing out Safety Meeting Record samplers (more about this below), then traveling out to the Pacific Northwest and back. These guys have been hard at work in their trade for years now, so if you get a chance, go out to one of their shows and see them do what they do best.

2. Quiet Life's "Act Natural" is out and available for purchase through our merch store, finer record stores (if your favorite record store is not stocking it, tell them to order it through Carrot Top Distribution), and mp3 download sites, such as Itunes, Emusic, Rhapsody, etc.

3. We now have a free Safety Meeting Records sampler available, called "The Safety First Compilation". It features 16 tracks of Safety Meeting material, including tracks from upcoming Titles, andMT Bearington records, as well as an unreleased Mountain Movers track. This sampler is only available at Safety Meeting shows. The next one is Tuesday, May 30th at Cafe Nine (see point 4).

4. Titles' new CD, "Up With The Sun", is just about done. The national street date for this CD is July 15th, but we're going to release it locally on Friday, May 30th. The release party is at Cafe Nine, it's FREE, 21 and over only, Etta Place is opening, and at midnight (after Titles' set), DJ Live Mike is going to be cutting up some records, so everyone can do some booty shaking. here's the cover:

5. Finally, Crooked Hook is going to have some music featured in the upcoming horror movie, Banshee!! Be on the lookout for this one, it's looks like a lot of fun. Click on the movie poster below to see the trailer, featuring "Deep End" right in the beginning.

New Haven's HUMANOID is an instrumental five-piece. Guitarists Dave Lutz and Steve Ross, bassists Warren Brelsford and Phil Law (who joined the band after the recording of Live at Bar: 8.12.07), and drummer Mark Miller look to each other for inspiration, commiseration, and for the occasional completion of a piece. They communicate through sound, texture, and intuition. Despite their egalitarian, improvisational writing process and live performance, HUMANOID alternates between highly compositional harmony and dissonance, and completely freeform abstraction and ambiance; all of it buttressed by gross movement and subtle ornamentation.

New Quiet Life Artwork

We're jumping the gun, but we can't help it. The new Quiet Life record is just about back from the pressing plant. Here's a peak at the cover art. Remember, the album hits the streets on Tuesday, March 4, and there's a special Elm City release party on Sunday, March 2nd at BAR (254 Crown St, New Haven, CT), but there'll be more on that as the time approaches. Meanwhile, check out the stellar cover artwork, provided by David Ulrich.

Titles' Sleep-Inducing Fact Sheet:

In mid 2004, due to a post-college get-your-shit-together freak-out, a small Connecticut rock band fell apart. Everyone got jobs and moved about the country.

A few months after the band's break-up, guitarist Brad Amorosino began a solo project. He wrote, played a few shows, and then banded with drummer John Miller. TITLES, the duo, gained some musical clarity and
recorded an album. Bassist Adrian van de Graaff joined the band in the studio.

The self-titled album was released in September of 2006 on Connecticut's Welcome Home Records. Soon after the record's release, Matt Wilson joined the band on guitar and pedal steel. TITLES threw out their songs and started over.

In February of 2007, after moving into a squirrel-infested house on the New Haven shoreline, TITLES recorded 3 songs at Tarquin Studios with Greg Giorgio (The National, Boxer). While pending the release of these songs, the band tracked their second LP, also with Giorgio.

New Haven's Safety Meeting Records released the TITLES/Mountain Movers split seven inch in May of 2007 and the band completed a small mid-west/east coast tour. The second Titles LP, Up with the Sun, is
scheduled for release in May of 2008

Quiet Life is a candle with ecstatic wax and wick, modern burn and recycled light. Their blend of classic country/folk and indie/rock is one of the most genuine combinations being fused across modern America. Hailing from the whaling city of New London, Connecticut, this four-member rock outfit has all the sincerity of their great folk predecessors, influenced by the true honesty of American folk music and the raw expression of rock and roll's forefathers. Four boys with the enthusiasm of a young Bruce Springsteen and an undying determination to be heard, anxious to stay true to the roots of rock and roll, while adding a flavor of the new.

"Pleasant chord progressions, soft harmonies, and enough of a Southern wail to double check the band's Connecticut address."

Weigh Down

The Weigh Down arose from the charred remains of Seagrave and Leaves of Lothlorien in December of 1998. They released Good People in the Making in early 2001 on Meeting & Passing Records. After touring extensively throughout the country, opening up for such acts as Bright Eyes, Frank Black, Pedro the Lion, Cursive, and the Dismemberment Plan, Matt brought a set of narratively linked songs to the table, giving focus to the band, and Welcome to the Family Zoo was brought into the light. Weigh Down worked on this material for the next two years and the song writing process became increasingly collaborative. Looking to add new tones and textures, they took on keyboardist Emily Lee in late 2003. They set up camp in Mitch Rackin's Tone Float Studio in Chinatown and began recording Welcome to the Family Zoo in April. Weigh Down worked on the record through 2004 (into 2005, actually), taking the time to make sure everything sounded exactly as intended. And now, finally finding a home in Safety Meeting Records, the end result of several years' work is ready to be embraced by all.
